In this course, we’ll read a wide array of short texts, both stories and poetry, that exemplify concerns and experimental tendencies of American literature from 1900 to the present. As we read works from a period of dynamic change in literary form, we’ll practice skills of close reading, clear writing, and engaging discussion. Readings including short fiction by authors including Henry James, Gertrude Stein, Sherwood Anderson, Willa Cather, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Richard Wright, Thomas Pynchon, and George Saunders, and poetry by authors including Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, James Merrill, and Kenneth Goldsmith.
